What If You Already Have The Answers?

Life can throw us off balance. A major life change, an unexpected challenge, or even a growing sense that something needs to change can leave us feeling stuck, uncertain, or disconnected from how we want to be living.

Life coaching can provide a supportive space to do exactly that.  One of the foundational beliefs of coaching is that you already possess the wisdom and strength needed to create meaningful change.

In other words, you already have the answers within you.  Sometimes those answers are lost through overthinking, opinions of others, or drowned out by fear.  I’ve found that people already possess more wisdom than they give themselves credit for.  A coach's role is not to tell you your answers. The right questions will bring those answers to the surface.

Coaching and Therapy: Different but Valuable

Coaching and therapy each offer valuable support, but they serve different purposes.

Therapy can help individuals heal from past hurts, work through emotional challenges, and better understand patterns that may be affecting their lives today. Focusing on the past can be incredibly important and transformative before moving to the next step.

Coaching, on the other hand, is often most helpful for people who are seeking greater clarity, confidence, purpose, or direction. The coaching focus is on the present and the future. Whether you're adjusting to retirement, navigating a relationship change, or simply feeling stuck, perhaps coaching will help you move forward with greater intention and confidence.

Maybe My Friends or My Family Can Help?

Have you already tried talking things over with friends or family? The people who love us care deeply about our well-being, but they can also bring their own experiences, opinions, and their knowledge about your past decisions into the conversation.

Sometimes it helps to have a neutral person who is not emotionally involved in the situation.  Whether that person is a trusted mentor, counselor, coach, or a wise friend, an outside perspective can create space to sort through your thoughts and make decisions that feel right for you.

Finding Your Next Chapter

Major life transitions are one of the most common reasons people seek support.  Transitions can throw us completely off balance. Whether the transition is retirement, divorce, an empty nest, or another significant life event, you may feel the need to regain your footing as you start a new chapter.

Here are some sample coaching questions to ask yourself if you are going through a transition.

  • How will I make sure I’m ok as I go through this? How can I take care of myself?

  • What baby steps can I take right now to move from uncertainty to confidence?

  • Who can I confide in?  Will anyone truly listen? Who are my go-to people?

  • How can I create fulfillment and meaning as I go through this change?

  • What do I really want?  What’s at least two options available to me right now?

  • What skills have I developed that have helped me in the past?  Can I use those skills now?

Take a few moments to allow your answers to come to the surface as you ask yourself these questions.  When they do, write them down to review as needed.

Small Clear Action Steps

As clarity grows, so does confidence. Small steps matter. Many people find that progress happens when they identify one or two actions they are willing to take and then follow through consistently. Accountability can come from a coach, a trusted friend, a spouse, a support group, or simply by writing down commitments and reviewing them regularly.

If the answers don’t come immediately, remember that clarity can take time.  Continue reflecting, journaling, talking with trusted people, or seeking professional support if you feel stuck.

What’s Your Next Step?

Is there a change coming? You may have accomplished wonderful things throughout your life, yet now you’re facing a crossroads.  Or, without knowing why, you feel stuck where you are.  Seeking support during times of change is not a sign of weakness but a sign of wisdom. Whether you lean on friends, a mentor, therapist, coach, or another trusted resource, investing time and energy in your own growth can help you navigate life's changes with greater confidence and peace of mind.

Life’s transitions can feel overwhelming, but they also create opportunities for growth.  Trust that you may already possess more wisdom, resilience, and strength than you realize.  The next step could begin by simply asking yourself the right questions.
